Encounter II Lesson 6

ENCOUNTERING THE POWER AND WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT LESSON 6

INTRODUCTION

It is the obvious desire of every individual to be effective in their work. Every employer expects their employees to deliver at the highest level. Ministries similarly look up to their ministers to deliver superior results in various aspects of ministry. How can these expectations be realized?

The power from on high

Jesus’ ministry was founded on the power of the Holy Spirit .

The Lord Jesus Christ lived a near-ordinary life until the Holy Spirit came upon him.

Luke 4:14-19

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom…

And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

The essential purpose of the Holy Spirit is to Empower the believer.

Before his ascension Christ made it very clear to his disciples that when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, they will receive power and then begin the work of being witnesses.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

God has given us the Spirit of power

2 Timothy 1:7

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline”.

How Does One Get Empowered By The Holy Spirit?

The Scripture in several places talks about the men and women of God being “filled” with the Spirit for specific tasks.

Exodus 31:2-5 2

“See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts–to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship.”

Act 4:8

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!

Ephesians 5:18,

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”(NIV)

The Purpose and Work of the Holy Spirit

From the Scriptures, there seems to be two main purposes for the power of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life. The two can be distinguished as:

  1. Power unto Holiness
  2. The Power for Service

Power To Holiness

The Holy Spirit Sanctifies the recipient

The life of a believer is often a civil war between the desires of the flesh and those of the Holy Spirit that dwells within. This battle can only be won through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5: 16- 17

“So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want”.

Therefore Paul writing to the Ephesians exhorted them:

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

To be filled with the Holy Spirit as commanded here connotes the idea of being completely controlled by the Holy Spirit

Similarly, the more the Holy Spirit takes control of an individual, the less that person is likely to fulfill the sinful desires of the flesh.

The Holy Spirit brings transformation.

  • It is the indwelling Holy Spirit that brings about change in the life of a person when they become Christians.

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old [sinful nature] has gone, the new [spiritual nature] has come!” (NIV)

Implication

One cannot claim to be walking in the Spirit and yet not display any visible evidence of transformation in their lives. Old ways, old habits, or addictions must give way to a new life of righteousness and holiness as evidence of transformation.

Power for Service

The power for service is the anointing power that comes upon all those who get filled with the Holy Spirit that then enables them to serve as enabled by the Holy Spirit.

The unction to function

When one is filled with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit empowers them to accomplish tasks that they would otherwise not do in their own human strength.

1 Chronicles 12:18

“Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said: “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of Jesse! Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you.” So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands”.

Deuteronomy 34:9

“Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses”.

Judges 14:5-6,

Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat.

Luke 4:1-2

“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry”.

The Holy Spirit empowers for the work of ministry .

Even though He was the Son of God, Jesus was filled with the Spirit and thus divinely enabled for the work He came to do.

Act 10:38

[You know] how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

The Holy Spirit emboldens believers to confront opposition

When faced with opposition against the Gospel, the disciples were given power to deal with the opposition

Acts 4:8

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!

.

Acts 4:31

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly

Holy Spirit enables discernment of deceitful spirits

In the course of ministry, the Apostles came across lying spirits. The Holy Spirit helped the Apostles to recognize and deal with them.

Acts 13:9-10

Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?

Acts 5:3

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?”

The Holy Spirit sharpens skills for professional work.

When one is filled with the Holy Spirit, the anointing of the Holy Spirit is available to extraordinarily sharpen that person’s skills and abilities.

Class Discussion

To function without unction is tiring action.” David Oginde

  1. To what extent would you say this is a reality in our work and service?
  2. What steps can you take to cultivate a greater dependence on the Holy Spirit in areas of your work and service?

Exodus 31:2-5

“See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts–to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship.”

Daniel 5:13-14

So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah? I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.

Implication

If one chooses to be a Spirit filled doctor, engineer, secretary, administrator, etc; they can be enabled to do an extra-ordinary work through the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit anoints for battle

When a believer calls on God when confronted with warfare, the Holy Spirit will anoint them for war. For example, Gideon was anointed for war.

Judge 6:34

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him. (NIV)

Implication

As Spirit filled Christians we can depend on the Holy Spirit to help us in fighting all kinds of battles.

Jesus told His disciples in Luke 12:11-12,

When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

The Holy Spirit bestows ministry gifts

Through the baptism, the Holy Spirit continues to bestow special gifts upon individual believers as He pleases.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit…

to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.”

Implication

None of us should boast of the ministry gift that we have, since it is the Holy Spirit that has chosen to bestow that gift. Whatever gift you have is not private and personal, but for the good of the entire body of Christ.

The Holy Spirit convicts the world and exposes sin.

The Holy Spirit makes the world aware of sin and of righteousness. He does also reveal the hidden secrets and deceitful acts of men (both believers and non-believers).

John 16:8

When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

Acts 5:3

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?”

Conclusion

The infilling of the Holy Spirit brings dual blessing in the life of a believer – the Sanctifying power unto holiness, and the Anointing power unto service.

It follows therefore that if we want to be effective in our lives, in our work, and in our service to the Lord, we must seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
