UNDERSTANDING THE PERSON AND THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The role of the Holy Spirit in the life of an individual believer and the corporate body of church has been a bone of contention within the contemporary church.
It is therefore important to objectively explore and seek to understand thee issues as they relate to the person, presence and power of the holy spirit.
- The Person Of The Holy Spirit
Discernment-The Holy spirit knows
He knows all things and he alone knows the mind of God.1 Corinthians 2:10-11 “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
The Holy spirit knows what is in our minds and prays in accordance with the will of God.
Romans 8.27 “And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the spirit, because the spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”
Discretion-The holy spirit has a will.
He has a personal volition.
John 3.8” The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the spirit.”
He has freedom of will.
Acts 13.2 While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting , the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
We therefore cannot command the Holy Spirit to act according to our wishes. Here acts according to His own pleasure.
Deeds -The Holy Spirit Acts.
He is presented as having the ability to act in and of His own will.
Identify how many verbs (action words) are associated with the Holy Spirit in the above text – John 16:13-14. Underline the words.
What does this tell us about the nature of the Holy Spirit?
John 16:13-14 But when he, the spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come .He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
In Luke 12:11-12 Jesus told His disciples
“When you are brought before the synagogue, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say”
Disappointment– The Holy Spirit can be quenched.
Paul warns in 1st Thessalonians 5:19, ‘Do not quench the spirit’
When humans persisted in sin God was grieved
Genesis 6.3” then the Lord said, “My spirit will not contend with man forever , for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years”
We ought to quickly act in obedience when convicted by the Holy spirit. When we do not obey we risk the danger of being abandoned to our own ways leading to death and destruction.
The Presence Of The Holy Spirit
Jesus promised to send the Counselor
He reassured the disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit to be their helper
John 14:16-17 “And I will ask the father and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-the spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him , because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him for he lives in you.”
Acts 1.8” But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
- The Holy Spirit came at Pentecost .
As promise the Holy Spirit came upon the believers in the Upper Room.
.Acts 2.1-4 “ When the day of Pentecost came ,they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that…
…separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues ad the Spirit enabled them
The Holy Spirit convicts the world.
He makes the world aware of sin and of righteousness.
John 16:8 “When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.”
The work of evangelism can be done effectively only with the Holy spirit.
- The Holy Spirit dwells within every Believer.
Those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior have the Holy spirit residing in them.
Since He dwells in us we should walk in Holiness and let him freely work within us/
1 Corinthians 12:3 “Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 8:9 “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.”
1 Corinthians 6:19 “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.”
- The indwelling Spirit brings transformation
It is the indwelling of the Holy spirit in a believer that brings out change in a life of a person..
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old [sinful nature] has gone, the new [spiritual nature] has come!”
One cannot claim to be walking in the Spirit and yet not display any visible evidence of transformation in their lives. Old ways, old habits, or addictions must give way to a new life of righteousness and holiness as evidence of transformation
- The indwelling Spirit produces the fruit of righteousness.
Our carnal person is spiritually dead. Such a person cannot bear the fruit of righteousness.Galatians 5:19-21
“The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
The Holy Spirit plays a critical role in our journey with the Lord. We should allow the Holy Spirit His rightful place in our lives so we can be victorious Christians.
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
